The Board of Sanitary Commissioners voted Nov. 26 to approve resolution 2025-15, an interlocal agreement in which the Muncie Sanitary District’s sanitation and recycling department will assume regular trash pickup at city parks, overlooks along the river and certain community facilities, excluding the reservoir.
Sanitation Superintendent Jason DeNati presented the proposal and said the parks department would transfer a 20/20 small packer truck to the sanitation fleet in exchange for the service. DeNati said he had presented the proposal to the Parks Board, which voted unanimously in favor, and to the Board of Public Works, which is preparing a comparable resolution.
The agreement covers routine park trash pickup and occasional event support (for example Ironman events), but DeNati said the reservoir’s regular service would remain the parks department’s responsibility. Board members expressed support for the transfer, noting the sanitation department’s experience and the benefit of adding a relatively modern packer to a fleet that DeNati said includes older units. The board approved the resolution by voice vote.
The resolution’s implementation will depend on a finalized interlocal agreement and a related Board of Public Works resolution; the sanitation superintendent said the city attorney is reviewing the draft. No financial transfer was specified in the board presentation.
