Veterans assistance office reports faster VA processing, $8.6M in new benefits and a new hire

The Veterans Assistance Commission told the Public Service Committee on Nov. 20 that claim adjudication times have improved markedly. Representative Zimmerman said some claims have been decided in as few as two days and that average times have fallen to around, or under, 130 days in recent months. He contrasted current performance with earlier years when claims often took much longer to resolve.
Zimmerman told the committee, "For this fiscal year, we brought in $8,600,000 in new benefits, and that's benefits that are payable directly into veterans' pockets here in Kane County." He noted that figure excludes GI Bill payments to schools and VA health care. Zimmerman also introduced the commission’s new veteran service officer, Habakkuk Rico, who joined from the McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission, has five years of active duty and two tours in Afghanistan.
Committee members asked questions about memorial placement later in the veterans segment, including where to plant a donated Liberty Tree; Zimmerman said the administration committee and courthouse stakeholders will meet to consider placement, arborist input and longevity concerns before a decision.
No formal action was taken on benefits or personnel at the meeting; the commission reported operational improvements and welcomed the new staff member.
