The Committee on Public Safety, Judiciary and Homeland Security on a voice vote passed for the day an intergovernmental agreement with Schoolcraft College to provide police recruit academy training for up to 19 Wayne County Sheriff's Office recruits over two sessions, after union concerns were raised and commissioners asked for additional review.
Jerome Bocconi, director of sheriff finance, summarized the agreement and said Schoolcraft offers two 17-week recruit academies (one that began in July 2025 and a winter session). He said the contract would cover seating for recruits across fall and winter sessions and listed timing and enrollment numbers. "This began in July 2025," Bocconi said, and described seating allocations and discretionary picks by the sheriff.
Bonita Terry, identified as chief of administration by the sheriff's office, confirmed recent graduations and added operational context. During the discussion, a commissioner noted potential union concerns about issues at Schoolcraft. Commissioner Dobbs moved to pass the item for the day to allow time to research the matter; the motion was supported and carried. Meeting staff said the chief of staff is working with the college and that the chair's office would be the liaison; commissioners asked staff to report back once the issues are resolved.
Bocconi also said the sheriff's office may request contract amendments if additional recruits want to attend beyond the seats covered in the current agreement. The committee did not take final action on the agreement and expects the item to return after staff follow-up.
