The Salt Lake City Board of Canvassers on Nov. 4 adopted a resolution certifying the results of the city's 2025 municipal general election.
City Recorder Keith Reynolds read the official totals provided by Salt Lake County, saying, "There were 60,346 active registered voters in Salt Lake City. 20,305 ballots cast ... The total voter turnout was 33.6%." He also noted, "Salt Lake City participated in the ranked choice voting method through the municipal alternative voting pilot project." Reynolds listed top candidate vote totals and identified the duly elected council members for the contested districts.
The certified results named Victoria Petro as the winner in Council District 1 (1,664 votes to Steven Otterstrom's 1,546), Chris Wharton as the District 3 winner (3,621 votes; other top totals listed for Blake McCleary and Liddy Huntsman Hernandez), and Erica Carlson as the District 5 winner (4,042 votes). Sarah Young, running unopposed in District 7, received 3,650 votes, and was identified as the duly elected District 7 council member. The recorder said newly elected officials will receive certificates of election after the board adopts the certification resolution.
A motion to adopt the resolution was made during the limited canvass session and recorded in the proceedings as moved by council member Mano and seconded by council member Dugan. The chair called for the vote; members responded "Aye," no opposition was recorded, and the board's adoption was announced as unanimous. The transcript does not record a numeric roll-call tally for the vote.
Earlier in the limited meeting the board also approved the meeting minutes of Dec. 5, 2023; that procedural motion was recorded as moved by council member Pui and seconded by council member Mano.
The board concluded the canvass and adjourned. Following the certification, staff will provide official certificates of election to the newly elected council members as stated in the proceedings.
