The Salt Lake City Council unanimously adopted a joint ceremonial resolution with the mayor declaring November 2025 Native American Heritage Month.
Council member Mano read the resolution aloud, naming the Indigenous nations the city recognizes and saying the proclamation affirms the city’s commitment to "fostering meaningful dialogue, improving services, and building partnerships with Native American residents." After the reading, Council member Wharton moved to adopt the resolution; Council member Lopez Chavez seconded, and the chair called the voice vote with the motion passing unanimously.
Skye Woods Billy, a University of Utah freshman representing the Center of Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement, accepted the resolution on behalf of students and campus programs. "As we enter a week of Thanksgiving, I'm honored to accept this resolution," Skye said, noting campus events that highlight Native culture and offer a sense of belonging.
The resolution is ceremonial and recognizes the historical and ongoing contributions of Native peoples to Salt Lake City. The council took the action during its regular meeting; no implementing legislation or funding action was announced at the time. The council adjourned after completing its consent business.
The council's next steps were not specified during the meeting.
