The Center Grove Community School Corporation board voted to approve a resolution allowing the district to join class‑action litigation against social media companies whose platforms are alleged to have harmed student mental health and disrupted the educational environment.
Dr. Long told the board that national research and district experience point to elevated rates of anxiety, depression and bullying linked to social media use and that participating in the litigation aligns with the district’s duty to advocate for student well‑being. He said more than 1,800 school districts nationwide and at least 90 districts in Indiana have joined similar actions.
Board members asked what information the plaintiffs’ attorneys would request; Dr. Long said the district would likely be asked for de‑identified, high‑level data such as counseling and discipline statistics only after the district approved participation. The board confirmed the arrangement is a contingency‑fee model: outside counsel would be paid from any recovery and the district would not pay hourly fees; if there is no recovery, the district owes no legal fees.
A motion to approve the resolution authorizing litigation was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
