The Liberty County Sheriff's Office told the Board of Commissioners it has obtained state certification through the Bureau of Chiefs of Police and that the recognition positions the agency among the state's top agencies.

"We are now one of the 14 sheriff offices out of 159 counties in the state of Georgia to have a state certification," the sheriff said, describing the multi-year effort to document policies, procedures and operations and to meet state standards. He said the certification helps qualify the office for grants and demonstrates adherence to state code.

Sheriff and command staff outlined operational metrics for 2024 and early 2025, including traffic-stop totals (about 15,000 in 2024 and 13,000 to date in 2025), a reduction in DUI ranking—from eighth in a prior count to 38th after establishing a dedicated traffic enforcement unit—and "one homicide this year," figures the sheriff presented while thanking staff. He also reported 171 allotted positions and 143 current employees, with five cadets graduating the next day.

The sheriff emphasized the role of school resource officers, explained the difference between law enforcement and school administrative responsibilities, and urged parents and community members to report threats and concerning social-media posts quickly so officers can intervene before an incident.

The commissioners congratulated the sheriff and invited a photo; no formal action was required on the certification itself during the meeting.
