Joseph Shehidi, a planner with the City of Laramie, said the Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit on Nov. 10 to allow a third accessory structure — a 10-by-20-foot carport — on a property in the city’s R-3 multifamily zoning district.
"A conditional use permit or CUP allows certain uses or development features that may be appropriate within a zoning district if specific standards are met and the use is compatible with nearby properties," Shehidi said, explaining why the commission reviewed the request.
Staff told the commission the carport would be placed in front of an existing garage, use the existing driveway without changing circulation, and would not increase parking demand. "Staff found that the proposal meets all the city requirements," Shehidi said. He added that the property’s mature landscaping will mostly screen the addition from view and that this type of structure is typical for the neighborhood.
Shehidi reported the commission received one public comment and that no concerns were raised. Commissioners also identified and corrected a drafting error in the meeting packet that listed the parcel’s zoning as R-1 in one place; staff confirmed the correct zoning designation is R-3.
The applicant participated virtually and had no additional comments, and the Planning Commission approved the conditional use permit. The transcript did not record a mover or seconder nor provide a roll-call vote tally.
For details and documents related to the project, the commission directed interested parties to the City of Laramie planning page: https://cityoflaramie.org/planning. The recap concluded with a reminder about upcoming planning efforts and the next Planning Commission meeting.
