Lacey Parks representatives told the CAR PFD board that use of the Regional Athletic Complex (RAC) continues to grow, driven by tournaments and recurring league play, and that planned capital improvements are intended to increase year-round usability and tournament hosting capacity.
Recreation manager Sue Falesh reported that field rentals, shelter reservations and weekend tournament play continue to rise. The RAC draws regional teams and visitors from outside Thurston County, producing measurable local economic activity.
Planned improvements described to the board include converting Soccer Field 2 from grass to turf to allow more year‑round programming, increasing spectator seating on Soccer Field 1, adding or improving fencing for softball and baseball fields, doing concrete repairs, and installing stronger Wi‑Fi infrastructure needed for event streaming and tournament operations. Project planning was described as being coordinated with consultants and phased to match funding availability.
Why it matters: Turf conversion and infrastructure upgrades would increase the complex’s utility and revenue potential, support larger regional events, and reduce seasonal downtime. Board and staff discussed timing and phasing, with design milestones planned for 2025–2026 and construction starting when funding and permitting align.
Next steps: Staff will advance design to 60% and return with funding and schedule details during the PFD’s upcoming planning cycle.
