The LaSalle County Board voted to table discussion of an ordinance to increase election‑judge pay at its Nov. 26 meeting after an extended debate over recruitment needs, regional pay comparisons and cost to taxpayers.
The ordinance under consideration would have set compensation for election judges at $225 per day (the packet referenced alternatives and committee discussion that included $300/day in an earlier committee recommendation). Proponents, including Mister Traeger, said a higher rate would better recognize the length of service and improve recruitment and retention; Traeger noted the committee had previously considered $300/day and argued that $300 equated to roughly $20 per hour.
Opponents questioned the cost and noted the county clerk reported 330 judges already signed up for the next election. Mister Reed presented a survey of surrounding counties showing average pay around $190.55 and argued that a $300/day rate would add roughly $38,000–$38,000+ per election compared with current levels, a sum some members said was unnecessary. Several members proposed linking higher pay to training completion rather than a blanket increase.
Mister Miller moved to table the ordinance until January; the motion carried on a roll call, 12 yes and 11 no. Board members requested the clerk’s survey data and additional detail on judge counts and training stipend options for the January meeting.
