Joe Neville, Public Works Director for Hoffman Estates, welcomed residents to the 2025 Public Works Open House and “pumpkin smash,” saying the event combines public education with community activities. "I'm the public works director for Hoffman Estates. Glad to have everybody here at our 2025 public works open house and pumpkin smash," Neville said.
Neville explained that residents can bring pumpkins after Halloween for disposal: “you can bring your pumpkins here, after Halloween every year, and we will, drop them from our grapple truck.” The department also offered snowplow rides so attendees could see what plow drivers encounter on the road, refreshments, and hands-on access to equipment.
Staff displayed and explained several pieces of heavy equipment and simulated operations that the department handles, including end loaders and backhoes, a water-main break simulation, a sanitary lift station simulation, and a large Vactor truck. The demonstrations were designed to show routine maintenance work and emergency responses performed by public works personnel.
Attendees and staff emphasized the event’s educational value. An attendee recommended the food and giveaways and noted the event is held annually in November. Organizers highlighted that the open house is an opportunity for children and families to learn about the hidden work of maintaining roads and utilities and to meet the employees who perform those duties.
The event concluded with informal remarks and gratitude to visitors. Neville said the department looks forward to holding the open house again next year.
