The Hoffman Estates Arts Commission held its inaugural Zine Fest at Village Hall, bringing more than 20 local vendors and creators together to exhibit, read and sell self-published works. "I'm part of the Hoffman Estates Arts Commission, and I am here at our inaugural zine fest," said Beth Schneider, who helped organize the event.

Schneider described a zine fest as a self-published marketplace where creators display anything from comics to nonfiction; she said about four zinesters were doing readings that afternoon for exhibitors and attendees. Vendors included writers, cartoonists and character artists; one group, the Lonely Writers Club, described a "slam shop" that pairs slam poetry with a chance for contributors to appear in future editions.

Organizers said the Arts Commission began planning the event last year and intends to make Zine Fest an annual program. The commission also asked the public to visit hoffmanestatesarts.com for more information and to volunteer for future arts programming such as the summer concert series and the Village Hall gallery.
