Mount Rogers update: county fiber crews report 76% of final passings complete, spring finish likely

The Mount Rogers Planning District Commission updated the Wythe County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 12, 2025, saying countywide fiber construction has progressed to the final section and crews have completed roughly 76% of the remaining passings.
Commission representatives including Mr. Sizemore told supervisors the project has been under construction for just over a month and that VDOT permitting is about 80% complete. “They are they’ve assured us they’re gonna kick up the pace,” a commission representative said, adding that new crews started earlier this month.
Officials clarified that the 76% figure applies to the passings remaining in the last section of the county’s buildout rather than the entire system. Presenters said the project involves roughly 6,000 passings and that the last areas are the most difficult to complete. They reported about 65 customer installs completed so far and about 22 pending requests in areas where service teams are scheduling work.
Staff noted an interactive map is available on the commission’s website and is updated weekly to show which addresses have moved from pending to complete. The presenters estimated the remaining work would be finished in spring, but said timing depends on weather.
Chair and board members discussed the county’s representation on the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission, and the chair said the board will send a letter through normal channels when the current term expires and will bring a candidate forward for appointment in January.
