Anchorage Advisory Committee adopts objectives; members begin ferry and Mound House coordination

The Anchorage Advisory Committee on Nov. 24 approved a set of objectives for the coming year that center on restoring full mooring-field functionality, increasing promotion and education, and partnering with related projects such as a proposed ferry service tied to the Arches development.
"1, we really wanna support a fully operational mooring field... Secondly, we wanna be very involved in promotion, education, marketing... And then third, partnering with related projects," Chair Chris Bridal King read as the three buckets of objectives the committee voted to forward to council. Sam Lurie moved to adopt the objectives and the motion passed with unanimous assent.
Committee members discussed coordination with the Arches developer and ferry planning. Jim, a committee liaison, identified the Freeland family (Ben Freeland) as the primary contact for ferry operations: "the key point of contact is the Freeland family, Ben Freeland and his son, because they will be either operating the ferry or hiring a firm to operate the ferry." Members raised logistics questions — docking at Mound House, temporary dinghy docks, parking and timing — and flagged a contractual phrase that might permit the operator to run the ferry only when profitable; members said the committee should monitor terms and plan connectivity and parking at proposed stops.
Curtis said the town is exploring placement of a temporary dinghy dock at Mound House to provide vessel access while longer-term solutions are worked out. The committee asked staff to begin outreach and include the ferry topic in strategic planning for the next one to two years.
What’s next: the committee will present objectives to council (chair to present on Monday), continue coordination with the Freeland point of contact and examine dock and stop planning for Mound House and other island locations.
