Summary
Fire Chief Conrad said incidents year-to-date reached 1,283 with lift assists and smoke-alarm calls each up about 50% over last year; the police chief said the department distributes free gun locks and will publicize availability online.
Fire Chief Conrad told the South Lyon City Council that the fire department has recorded 1,283 incidents year to date and 47 incidents since Nov. 13, including 31 EMS calls, eight service calls, one good-intent call and seven false alarms.
“We are up over last year, and we still have a month to go,” Conrad said. He added the department is seeing increases in certain call types: lift assists and smoke-alarm calls are each about 50% higher than last year. Conrad noted the department recently finished installing the last of its hardwired smoke alarms but said the state does not supply hardwired alarms, and staff are seeking vendors and grant opportunities to restock.
Conrad also said the department would accept donated CO and smoke alarms and recommended standard name brands: Kidde or First Alert. He announced a tentative pre-construction meeting for the new engine on Jan. 28.
In the police report, the police chief (not named in the transcript) summarized recent community engagements and responded to a council request for a presentation on the state’s safety-lock statute and safe storage practices. The chief said the department provides free gun locks and will post availability information online if it is not already listed.
“We do have free gun locks, and if we run out, I can get more,” the police chief said.
Next steps: the fire department will pursue vendor or grant options for hardwired smoke alarms and continue public education; the police department will confirm and publicize gun-lock availability.
