Speaker 2 told the meeting the city closed the Mill Street bridge between Tiffany and West Broadway after receiving a state notification that the structure should be closed. "So we went out and had to close it. We put up detour signs," Speaker 2 said.
Speaker 2 said the state plans to bid the rebuild in 2029 and that it could take several years before construction completes, adding that the bridge will likely be closed for at least seven years while waiting for design and construction. Staff and state officials discussed whether interim repairs were cost-effective; city staff said the structure's condition and pending full rebuild make substantial interim investment unlikely.
The city did not take further action at this meeting beyond notification and detour installation. Staff said they will continue to coordinate with MassDOT and report back on scheduling.
