The Fitchburg School Committee unanimously approved acceptance of a package of federal and state grants totaling about $5.6 million at its Nov. 4 meeting.
Superintendent (speaker at the meeting) presented the allocations: Title I at $2,852,858 to support math and ELA interventionists districtwide; a special‑education allocation (listed as 02/4262) of $1,000,873; Title II at $284,980 for professional development and mentoring; Title III at $160,196 for English‑language learners; Title IV at $209,075 for well‑rounded education, student health and technology; a Perkins career‑and‑technical education grant of $64,349; an early college support grant of $75,000; and a multilingual/newcomer and homeless support grant of $50,000. Committee documents and committee discussion also referenced a McKinney‑Vento homeless grant for $30,000.
A motion to approve action item 24‑432 was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote with all members voting in the affirmative; the chair declared the motion "unanimously approved, 24Dash432." Committee members asked for a future presentation by the district compliance officer on how title grant funds are used and audited.
Members and administrators noted Title I funding pays for interventionists whose salaries and benefits are covered by the allocation and that federal audit processes apply to several of the grants.
