The Trinidad Coastal Land Trust has opened a free beach wheelchair self-checkout at Saunders Park in Trinidad to make the coast more accessible, a representative of the trust said.
The trust representative said the self-checkout shed was assembled by College Corps fellows working with the land trust. "The Trinidad Coastal Land Trust has opened a free beach wheelchair self checkout to make beaches more accessible," the representative said.
The trust described itself as "a small nonprofit here in Humboldt County" that supports access to the ocean. The representative said the wheelchair program was created because "there's a need for everyone of all abilities to access the coast." According to the trust, visitors can receive a code and use that code at the Saunders Park self-checkout to take a wheelchair without first locating staff. "So folks without having to find a staff member at the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust, can simply come to Trinidad here in Saunders Park, type in a code that they can receive, and check it out themselves," the speaker said.
The trust said the initiative is intended to lower barriers for visitors who use wheelchairs and to expand independent access to the beach. The announcement did not specify the number of wheelchairs available, how to obtain a code in advance, or ongoing maintenance plans.
Trinidad Coastal Land Trust and community partners did not announce a follow-up schedule; contact information for long-term program administration and details about funding were not specified.
