DeLand designates three veteran/Gold Star parking spaces in Lot 11 on honor system

The DeLand City Commission voted Nov. 3 to designate three parking spaces in Lot 11 (immediately north of the County Administration Building) for veterans or Gold Star families. City staff said the county director of veterans services requested the designation; because enforcement is not certain the spaces are intended to operate on an honor system.
Commissioner Kevin Reed raised concerns that removing two or three public spaces could conflict with downtown parking thresholds used in development review and suggested two spaces might better reconcile competing needs. Vice Mayor Davis and other commissioners said the location is appropriate because the county's veterans‑services office is in the adjacent building and that three spaces is a reasonable compromise. Staff cautioned that printed signs might not be ready in time for Veterans Day.
After brief discussion, the commission moved and seconded the proposal and the motion carried by voice vote.
The designation is symbolic and intended to make it easier for veterans accessing county veterans services to find nearby parking; signs and enforcement will be handled administratively.
