Board approves routine consent items and personnel actions; several amendments on redistricting fail

At Wednesday—s meeting the Anne Arundel County Board of Education approved a number of routine items by roll call and recorded outcomes on several contested amendments.

Consent and personnel: The board unanimously approved the bundled consent package for contracts (items 6.01—6.08) and authorized award of those contracts; the motion passed 8-0. The superintendent recommended administrative personnel appointments discussed in executive session; the board approved those appointments 8-0 as well.

Policy adoption: Policy IIB (promotion and retention), updated to align with the Maryland State Board of Education—s pre-K—3 literacy policy and promotion requirements for elementary students, was adopted on third reading with an 8-0 vote.

Redistricting amendment outcomes: Multiple amendments to the Phase 2 redistricting recommendation failed on 4-4 ties, including a motion to remove the split articulation of Nantucket Elementary and an amendment to keep 27 students in Davidsonville. A proposed expansion of legacy-student protections (allowing rising fifth-, eighth- and eleventh-graders the option to remain at current schools if families provided transportation) also failed 4-4. The final adoption of revised Board Recommendation 3 passed 5-3.
