Board members used the Nov. 21 Seattle Park District special meeting to press Parks staff for a final feasibility and funding decision on Judkins Playfield turf.

Board member Nelson said recent bid information suggests turf installation costs could be roughly $7 million–$8 million for the upper field and $4 million–$5 million for the lower field. He stressed that the Park District’s six‑year funding plan (Resolution 51) asked Parks and Seattle Public Schools to study turf at Judkins and return with feasibility information.

Karina Bull and Superintendent AP Diaz told the board that while Parks has studied the project and discussed bid pricing, the field sits on Seattle Public Schools property and the Park District’s ability to proceed depends on confirmation from the school district; the existing lease was described as running through 2038. Staff said they will continue conversations with SPS and consider funding options, including whether Park District appropriations or other funds would be applied.

Board members also described a move toward “sustainable fields” and said the new infill material for turf fields will be cork rather than rubber.

Next steps: Parks staff will continue to coordinate with Seattle Public Schools on the lease and feasibility, and report back to the board with additional clarification and cost information.
