County outlines warming-shelter schedule, volunteer trainings and intake rules

Emergency-management staff told commissioners the county’s warming shelter will operate for the winter season, with volunteer training scheduled for Thursday (the 20th) and the shelter opening 'Saturday, the 20 second' and running through March 15.
Staff said volunteers can sign up through a schedule-planning app and that there are four different shifts each night. Standard check-in will run from 6 to 9 p.m.; after 9 p.m. entry will be coordinated through law enforcement and limited to designated check-ins. Emergency management also said there is one category of background concern that will disqualify an individual; those who cannot be accepted at the shelter will be referred to a partner facility in Fort Wayne for warming services.
Staff added that equipment and bedding were stocked via donations and state surplus pickups (including cots, PPE and other supplies) and that a small trailer is used to store extra bedding during the off season.
The board did not take a separate vote on the shelter details; staff presented the operational plan and asked commissioners to note it for awareness and logistical support.
The next step is volunteer outreach and making the sign-up app available to community volunteers so staffing and shift coverage can be finalized prior to opening.
