An insurance representative urged moving smoking receptacles farther from building entrances to reduce fire risk and indoor smoke infiltration. Commissioners discussed ADA and corrections-staff constraints and noted state rules about minimum distances from doors. After debate, a motion to table the matter until the board’s first meeting in November was made and seconded; the presiding commissioner said the motion carried.
The board did not adopt a new tobacco policy at this meeting and instructed staff to continue studying implementation issues, including how any change would interact with personnel policy, break rules and security-sensitive operations such as corrections or dispatch.
