County moves to acquire 28.6 acres near Bar Hammock Preserve with option contract

The Board of County Commissioners approved an option contract on Oct. 28 to acquire a roughly 28.6-acre parcel southwest of Micanopy adjacent to the Carr and McNabb Bar Hammock Preserve additions. Land Conservation Program Manager Andy Chrisman said the purchase would advance a corridor connecting Bar Hammock Preserve to Price's Scrub State Park in Marion County if other pieces of the corridor are acquired.
Chrisman described natural communities on the site (dome swamp, depression marsh, mesic hammock and successional pine-hardwood forest) and noted a small wetland in the northwest portion of the parcel. The option contract lists a purchase price of $263,396 (acreage-based, subject to final survey) and estimated due-diligence costs of $36,340, for a total appropriation request of $329,710.
Commissioners moved and seconded staff's recommendation; the motion carried by voice vote.
What happens next: staff will proceed with due diligence and closing procedures under the option contract timeline; the contract allows up to 135 days from approval to closing but staff said some closings can occur sooner.
