Leon County commission elects Christian Caban chair, O'Keefe vice chair during reorganization

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners completed its annual reorganization in November 2025, unanimously electing Commissioner Christian Caban as chair and Commissioner O'Keefe as vice chair, Clerk and Comptroller Gwen Marshall Knight announced during the meeting.
Gwen Marshall Knight opened the floor for nominations; Commissioner Cobb nominated Christian Caban for chair and the motion was seconded. "Any opposed? Hearing none, congratulations Commissioner Caban for your election, Chairman," Knight said. Commissioner Minor nominated Commissioner O'Keefe for vice chair; that nomination also drew no opposition.
After repeating the oath administered by Clerk Knight, Caban thanked his colleagues and laid out priorities for the coming year, saying the board should "govern with transparency, accountability, and respect." He highlighted resilience, the comprehensive plan process, homelessness and Blueprint among items he intends to support and pledged to assist individual commissioners in advancing district projects.
Outgoing Chair Brian Welch received a commemorative gavel plaque and affirmations from colleagues during a recognition ceremony prior to the reorganization. Welch reflected on his year in office and praised the commission's collegial approach to governance.
The reorganization proceeded without recorded opposition, and the board recessed briefly before moving into awards and presentations and later into scheduled public hearings.
