Aguirre de Lio, host of El Segundo News, used the city bulletin to outline a range of community holiday events and charity drives taking place in El Segundo and nearby counties this December.
The El Segundo Police Department is again partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Marine Toys for Tots program. "The Marine Toys for Tots program...aims to deliver the joy of Christmas and a message of hope through the gift of a new toy," Aguirre de Lio said. Community members may donate new, unwrapped toys through December 10 at the El Segundo Police Department lobby (Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–6 p.m.) or at the Mattel Headquarters Holiday Tent, 1955 East Grand Avenue (Thursday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.). For more information, the host directed listeners to the El Segundo Police Department website.
The El Segundo Fire Department is running the Spark of Love Toy Drive, now in its 30th year, with donated toys and sports equipment distributed to underserved children and teens across Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura and Riverside counties. Donations are accepted at Fire Station 1 on weekdays through December 19, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; contact sparkoflove@elsegundopd.org for organizational requests.
City holiday programming includes the Recreation, Parks and Library Department's Joy Around the World Festival and tree lighting on Thursday, December 4, from 3 to 8 p.m. at City Hall Plaza and the 300 block of Main Street. The program will feature multicultural music and dance, a kids train ride, food trucks, crafts and a 5:30 p.m. tree lighting. FastPass wristbands are available at the Joslyn Center to El Segundo residents with a valid recreation ID; wristband holders must be in the FastPass line before the lighting.
