City of Champaign staff on [date of meeting] described the start of a comprehensive housing needs analysis — the city’s first such plan in more than 15 years — and asked residents and landlords to participate in a set of surveys to inform recommended strategies.
Lauren Weber and Sarah Tate of the city’s Neighborhood Services Department said the project, begun in August with RDG Planning & Design of Omaha, will combine local data (building permits, rent trends) with community engagement. "It's the city's first comprehensive housing plan in over 15 years now," Weber said, describing efforts to quantify unit needs by income level and preferred housing types.
The team said it has conducted seven listening sessions with stakeholders and posted three QR-coded surveys for residents, landlords and service providers to gather input. "No one understands the city's housing challenges better than those who live and or work here," Sarah Tate said, pointing to the resident survey and urging coalition members to share flyers and visit the project's website.
City staff said an interim update on analyzed data will be presented to the city council on Jan. 13 and encouraged coalition members to distribute the surveys and attend listening events or view materials on the project website.
