The Board of Adjustment approved Visit Mobile’s request to install informational signage near the Amtrak platform at 11 South Water Street while restricting the two wall/platform signs to remove Amtrak branding and promotional content.
Oliver Dorgan, speaking for Visit Mobile, said the proposed informational sign (about 36 inches by 96 inches) would direct arriving Amtrak passengers to restaurants, lodging and things to do in Mobile. Dorgan said Visit Mobile is not representing Amtrak and that the organization’s goal is to place a small, close‑to‑platform resource for passengers.
Staff clarified that several existing freestanding and wall signs bearing Amtrak branding are already present; the Visit Mobile informational sign does not exceed 20 square feet and contains no advertising, so staff treated it differently from the Amtrak‑branded signs that triggered the variance request.
The chair recommended approval of four freestanding on‑premise signs and limiting the two wall signs to remove the Amtrak logo or advertising. The board seconded the motion, voted in favor and carried the motion by voice vote. No public commenters spoke in opposition during the hearing.
