Baker County tourism board approves $12,000 for Olustee Battlefield event

The Baker County Tourist Development Council on Tuesday approved a $12,000 funding request from the Olustee Battlefield Citizen Support Organization to help publicize and support the event.
The chair said the request was "mainly for the advertising piece, print, Internet, radio, signage, and slamming shopping centers," and board members discussed whether the fund could cover other event costs. Members emphasized the need to set clearer parameters for how tourist-development funds are spent and to establish an annual budget to distribute funds more predictably.
After discussion, a motion to approve the Olustee request was made, seconded and carried unanimously. A board member signified support by saying "Aye," and the chair closed the vote with "Motion carried unanimously."
Board members noted that any awards from the tourism development council must still be forwarded to the county commission for final approval under the county's process. Staff also said consultant John will present an updated tourism plan at the council's December meeting to help inform budget decisions going forward.
The council's action will allow the Olustee group to continue its scheduled February activities with county sponsorship while staff and members finish drafting the proposed annual budget and clarified spending rules.
