County to advertise MSTU to separate sheriff services for unincorporated areas

The Lake County Board voted to advertise an ordinance to create a Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU) to account for sheriff services provided only in the unincorporated areas. County staff said the action before the board would simply create the MSTU (it can be created at a zero levy) and must be done by Dec. 31 to appear on the next tax roll.
Staff and commissioners clarified the MSTU is intended to separate the portion of sheriff services—primarily road patrol—that benefit only unincorporated residents rather than adding a new tax. A consultant has been retained to analyze call data and budget details to determine what portion should be attributed to the new MSTU.
The board made a motion to advertise the ordinance and set a public hearing on Dec. 2. Commissioners discussed that, if created and funded, the general county millage could be reduced proportionately so that the combined total would equal the present levy.
No final tax rate was set; the public hearing will allow more detail and public comment before any adoption vote.
