Lake County proclaims November 2025 as Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week; local service providers report sharp rise in unsheltered population

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring November 2025 as National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week and invited local service providers to brief the board on needs and recent counts.
Barbara Vendito, executive director of the Mid Florida Homeless Coalition, told commissioners that the number referenced in the proclamation (162 households identified earlier) was drawn from August figures, and that more recent counts showed a sharp increase. "As of September 30, we were up to 640 unsheltered individuals in Lake County," Vendito said, and noted that seniors 60 and over represented a rapidly growing share of that count.
Patricia Scribe of the Neighborhood Center of South Lake described the center's service footprint and said the center served more than 106,570 people in 2024 and had seen a 5% increase in clients so far in the current year. Commissioners thanked providers, noted ongoing county tools to support affordable housing and emergency shelter, and agreed to receive future updates.
