Commissioners defer decision on Labor Day Association funding pending partner meeting and records check

County staff presented a letter from the Labor Day Association seeking county contributions or in‑kind services for the 2026 Labor Day celebration (Aug. 28–31). The proposal describes a four‑day event that includes carnival rides, pageants, a demolition derby and a large parade; staff noted the only certain line item included in the request is rent ($8,025).

Commissioners stressed the need to clarify what other partners (city, county and fairgrounds) will contribute and requested staff coordinate a meeting with tourism to determine historical practice and commitments. One commissioner said, "I feel like this is... we're going based on tradition without anything really," urging a clearer paper trail and formal process. The board agreed to table the funding decision and return with documentation and recommendations at a subsequent meeting.

Separately, commissioners considered a rerequest for $2,675 to cover one‑third of the 2025 fairgrounds rent after the board had declined to contribute earlier; resident Jim Shields and commissioners discussed whether a prior commitment appears in past minutes. The board moved to search previous minutes and, if documentation is found, seek an additional appropriation from county council before formalizing payment. The motion was seconded and approved.
