Alma City’s commission voted to impose a $25,100 special assessment on parcel 29-51-344-333-00 (702 Gratiot) to recover costs associated with asbestos testing, removal, demolition and restoration of a dangerous building.
City staff described the property as one of three dangerous buildings approved previously for demolition and said asbestos testing and removal work is complete. Staff explained the assessment protects the city’s invested dollars by attaching the cost to the property; if the property goes to foreclosure the county treasurer would honor the assessment as part of the minimum bid process, staff said. Notices were mailed to two addresses on file and an ad ran in the local paper; no owner responses or public comments were received at the hearing.
A resolution authorizing the $25,100 assessment was adopted by voice vote. Staff noted the assessment will stay with the property and will be collected if and when the parcel changes ownership or is foreclosed.
No further conditions or payment schedules were specified at the meeting.
