Grant County commissioners approve bridge grant submissions, right‑of‑way actions and vehicle/equipment purchases

Grant County’s highway department presented a wide-ranging operations and procurement update at the Nov. 3 commissioners meeting and received approvals for bridge grant submissions, easement actions and equipment purchases.
Highway Director reported the county submitted applications for two bridges under the 2026 Community Crossing program (Bridge 138 and Bridge 102) and said a federal bridge inspection supplement was approved. The director also described a 10‑foot diameter culvert installed on 400 North (between 1000 E and 1100 E) that reopened traffic and reduced a planned bridge replacement to a culvert solution.
The board authorized staff to pursue easements and acquire three small parcels connected to the Bridge 791 project; appraisals were presented and the estimated parcel payments discussed. The director said the parcel purchases and related costs will be paid from the Bridge 791 project fund.
For equipment, commissioners approved the purchase of two prefabricated aluminum culvert boxes to repair failing small structures (one quoted at $136,850 including design/stamping; another at $108,700), to be charged to the bridge fund. The board also authorized ordering four Volvo chassis for highway trucks after staff described long lead times and potential future emissions‑related costs. "The Volvo is built with it, so it's the same," the director said when comparing chassis options; the Volvo quote discussed at the meeting was roughly $152,116 per chassis.
Separately, the highway director presented a quote for a new boom mower (total price with trade‑in reported as $136,480.92; trade‑in value discussed as roughly $70,000) and the commission approved the trade and replacement purchase by voice vote.
The director also said the county will reapply for federal funding for Bridge 712 (Branch Street in Marion) and recommended annually setting aside matching funds so the county is prepared if awarded.
All procurement and easement‑pursuit motions passed by voice vote. Commissioners directed staff to continue grant coordination and to finalize procurement paperwork.
