Oviedo — The City of Oviedo will join the Central Florida Pledge Business Network after council members signaled support during a Dec. 1 discussion and directed staff to prepare a council resolution for the December agenda.
Mayor Megan Sladek and other council members described the pledge as a simple, public commitment to treat everyone with dignity and respect and to model civil discourse. Joel Hunter, chairman of the Central Florida Pledge, told the council the network began in response to rising divisiveness and cited membership from governments, law enforcement, education and businesses; he said Oviedo would be the first city in Seminole County to sign on.
Hunter described the pledge’s intent as a local, nonpolitical effort to counter "a culture...getting more and more divisive" by encouraging respectful engagement. The council instructed staff to prepare a resolution so all five members can sign at an upcoming meeting.
Why it matters: The pledge is largely symbolic but signals a municipal commitment to civility and may be used in public communications and civic programming. Staff said a resolution will be prepared for the December meeting and the city will present it for council signatures before the start of 2026.
