The Warrick County Board of Zoning Appeals on Nov. 25 granted a special-use permit to allow a 4-by-7-foot electronic message board at 7887 State Road 66 for CNS Inc., owner Jonathan S. Smith. The board placed standard permit conditions on the approval, including required improvement-location and building permits and limits on sign illumination and wording.
Staff told the board the existing message board had been in place for some time but had never been permitted; the application seeks to update that unit and bring it into compliance. Scott Elpers, representing the sign company, said the replacement is an upgrade to the Marathon branding package and will occupy the same location and comparable size as the prior sign.
Board members moved to approve after reading findings required for a special-use determination and attached conditions that restrict flashing or moving lights (except white), prohibit rotating beams, bar confusing words such as "stop" or "danger," and require conformity with the plot plan on file. The board voted in favor and staff said the approval paperwork would be ready the following Monday.
The approval is procedural: the board authorized the special use but left issuance of construction and building permits to the county’s permit process, which the applicant must complete before changes may be made to the sign.
