At the Dec. 1 meeting, the La Porte Common Council said it will investigate leases for Rumbly Apartments and review older leases to evaluate past administration practices; the council said it expects to speak with the property owners as part of that review.
Council members also reported on community services: the depot-based nest warming shelter recorded 446 bed nights in November (about 15 people per night), served 892 meals, welcomed 21 new guests including one child, and helped two people move into housing; volunteers contributed 189 hours. The council publicly thanked community volunteers for their support.
The meeting included additional community announcements. Council President Franke thanked the city for its support of the Thanksgiving turkey trot, which had 815 sign-ups, and asked that porta-potties used for the event be removed promptly. Charity, representing the La Porte Small Business Coalition, promoted a downtown cookie walk scheduled for Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and listed participating businesses.
No formal council action was taken on the Rumbly Apartments matter at the Dec. 1 meeting; council members said the issue will be further investigated and discussed in subsequent conversations with owners or staff.
