Spencer County Fiscal Court on Nov. 3 approved a package of repairs and small purchases intended to keep the county's snow- and salt-spreading fleet operational during the coming winter.
Public-works staff outlined equipment problems: several V-box spreader units (models from 20151) showed worn chains, cogs and bearings; quotes to repair individual boxes ranged from roughly $4,600 for targeted repairs to about $48,876 for a complete electric conversion and rebuild. Staff described an approach to prioritize repairs and procurement to maximize uptime and value.
The court approved a motion authorizing repairs to a flatbed truck spreader and the purchase of two new tailgate spreaders, with a cap of $5,000 per unit and a not-to-exceed package of $15,000 for the immediate purchases. Members said the purchase strategy balances short-term reliability and budget constraints while staff develop a longer-term replacement plan. The motion carried by voice vote.
Members also authorized purchase of eight tires for county vehicles and discussed options for procuring trailers or larger trucks to expand hauling capacity in future budget cycles.
Public-works staff were instructed to buy the spreaders, schedule repairs and return with a prioritized list of remaining box rebuilds and costs for the next budget cycle.
