The Manville City Council instructed staff to pursue options for an election polling location within the city after staff and the county reported the current site has been outgrown and presents safety and parking problems.
Tammy Bell outlined options including moving polling to the KC Hall, finding another city facility, or temporarily using the police station. She said the current polling location's traffic and parking constraints make it unsuitable for the March primary, and that ordinance amendments and a policy addressing electioneering and signage would be required if the police station is used. The council asked staff to work with the county, prepare any needed ordinance language and return in January with a recommendation and a firm timeline; the motion directing staff passed unanimously, 5–0.
Council members raised concerns about traffic control, officer availability and costs if the police station is used, and emphasized a clear temporary timeline so the police station would not become a long-term polling site without further review. Tammy said the county would typically pay for mandated election officers if required and that election judges have authority during polling operations.
Quote: "The current location where we have our elections...is no longer safe for the traffic that's coming in and out of that building trying to get onto Highway 6, nor is there enough parking," Tammy Bell said.
Next steps: Staff will coordinate with Brazoria County elections officials, draft any required sign and electioneering ordinance amendments, and return to council in January with recommended locations and a timeline for temporary arrangements.
