During the commissioners’ comment period, Commissioner Thompson asked the board and staff to provide comprehensive information about the county’s contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing confusion in public reporting and social media coverage.
“I would like to have information concerning this Alamance County ICE program from its beginning until its termination,” Thompson said, asking for annual contract amounts, how much the sheriff’s department profited from the contract and what was purchased with those profits. Thompson said she had reviewed emails and requested a jail annex tour and detailed financial data to clarify how renegotiation and termination affected jail capacity and county resources.
Thompson asked for a staff-level accounting, and suggested an audit or similar review to document the contract’s financial impact, including equipment or facility upgrades tied to contract revenue. She said she had previously requested the sheriff present the contract information and noted there had been conflicting accounts circulated publicly.
No formal board action on the ICE contract was taken during the meeting; Thompson said she would present her request during board comments and sought staff support in compiling documentation and briefing the board and public.
