The Houston County Economic Development Authority voted to approve a county property tax abatement for Snowpack Foods to support construction of a cold storage facility in the Caledonia industrial park.
At a 9:30 a.m. public hearing, Snowpack representatives presented a project overview and answered questions. Allison, presenting for staff, said the project ‘‘does qualify for a tax abatement’’ and that the EDA board recommended approval. The board moved into the public hearing, provided an opportunity for public comment (none offered), and later approved the abatement resolution by voice vote.
Key terms: presenters said the abatement would not exceed six years and — per the resolution packet — would start with taxes payable in 2027. Allison said the project would increase taxable market value and that Snowpack plans to lease part of the cold storage space to local businesses. Snowpack’s representative, Pete, said the company hopes to complete construction by July of the stated target year.
Why it matters: board members noted the abatement will help meet local demand for cold storage (for example, for small meat processors and local agricultural producers) and could free up space locally for other users. The board did not receive public opposition during the hearing and approved the resolution in a recorded motion.
Next step: the abatement will proceed under the county resolution; city approvals (if required for city taxes) remain a separate process and were noted as not completed for the city portion at the time of the hearing.
