The Akron City Council administered oaths to two newly seated members at its meeting. Judge Connie Hightower administered the oath to Fran Wilson, who was pinned by their sister Joan Wilson, and to Bruce Bolden, who was pinned by his wife Desiree Bolden.
Fran Wilson introduced themself to the council and audience, identifying as a fourth-generation Akron resident, a community organizer from the West Hill neighborhood and using they/them pronouns. "I use theythem pronouns," Wilson said, adding that they have frequently attended council and committee meetings and plan to bring that organizing experience to the office. Wilson cited Akron's 1969 civil disorders report and said, "The welfare or well-being of every person in this community is to some extent linked to the welfare of every other person," urging residents to "show up" and participate.
Wilson announced Ward 1 outreach details, saying Ward 1 residents can find updates at ackronward1.com and that the first ward meeting is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Bolch Street Community Center.
Bruce Bolden also took the oath, and a brief pinning and congratulations followed. Council members and staff completed an official roll call and resumed the business of the meeting.
The swearing-in and introductory remarks closed with the council moving on to its agenda items; the meeting adjourned after committee assignments and closing comments.
