The City of Wausau Parks and Recreation Committee on Monday approved a request from the Marathon County Historical Society to install temporary historical pop-up displays along the River's Edge Trail as part of America's 250th anniversary tour in 2026.

A staff member presenting the request said the displays would be installed in May, would remain roughly six to eight weeks and would be maintained by the historical society. ‘‘They will maintain all of the structures,’’ the presenter said, explaining the society is coordinating a statewide tour and that the committee could request the sign content before installation.

Alder Neal supported the idea but warned of vandalism and safety concerns at some Riverwalk locations, saying the committee had seen recent careless acts and asked whether monitoring meant ‘‘literal’’ oversight or only occasional checks. Staff and committee members noted the Riverwalk has a ‘‘pretty robust camera system’’ and said the parks department would work with the society on placement to keep displays within camera views.

Alder Rasmussen moved to approve the request; Alder Lukens seconded. After brief discussion about imagery and the risk of inflammatory content, the motion passed unanimously, with committee members responding ‘‘aye.’’

The society also plans a community event, possibly in Marathon Park, tied to the celebration; details and a final content review were not specified at the meeting. The presenter said the society needed approval before registering the displays with the state calendar.

The committee did not set a follow-up date for content review; staff said they could request sign content before installation.
