Speaker 1 called the Waunakee Community School District co-curricular meeting to order on Dec. 2 and turned the floor over to Nick, a district staff member, who delivered the committee's preclear report on fall athletics and student recognition.
Nick told the committee several teams won Badger Conference championships this season, including girls cross country, girls tennis, girls volleyball and football. "Always try to run the highest GPA for the team, and so that was girls swim, at 3.8:00," he said, highlighting academic performance across teams. He also explained how All-State honors are determined: "Allstate is obviously voted on by everybody in the state, not just your conference," he said, noting coach association membership and conference standing factor into eligibility.
On individual accomplishments, Nick said swimmer Megan Bridal set a school record at sectionals and then broke her own record the following week at state. "So she did it twice," he said, and he noted a 400 free relay also qualified for state. He added girls volleyball reached the semifinals for the first time in 32 years and several athletes from tennis, golf and boys soccer earned postseason recognition.
The committee also heard about operational changes at football games intended to improve safety. Nick described adjustments to parking and access along Community Drive, and thanked staff and partners for their work coordinating the changes: "So change is not easy, but I thank them for helping with the communication," he said, calling out Dustin for his role in implementation and coordination with maintenance and police.
Looking ahead, Nick said staff are discussing improved lighting near a dark drop-off area by the soccer field to reduce unsafe drop-offs. He outlined growth in boys volleyball and noted the Badger Conference plans to launch a boys volleyball conference in 2027 to streamline scheduling and recognition. He also described a new monthly student-recognition program that will begin in January, with coaches nominating athletes for a wider range of traits beyond statistics, and announced a signing day the next morning for six to seven students.
The committee did not take binding action on athletics during the meeting; the reports and upcoming consent items will be carried to the full board as appropriate.
