Davis Senior Commission votes to hold October meeting at Yolo Cares after members raise inclusion concerns

The Davis Senior Commission voted Aug. 19 to hold its October 2025 meeting at Yolo Cares, a nonprofit hospice and day‑program provider, and to receive a tour and briefing at its Galileo Place facility.

The motion to hold the off‑site meeting passed by voice vote after commissioners discussed whether the commission should appear to advocate for any single nonprofit that might seek city funding. Maria (city staff) reminded members that the commission’s role at such visits is information gathering and that Brown Act limits apply; she said she would coordinate logistics and ensure the decision is made as a recorded public meeting.

The off‑site decision followed an extended exchange in which Commissioner Carol said the senior commission had not been invited to a city planning meeting earlier in the spring and suggested that omission may have violated the Americans with Disabilities Act because seniors are a federally protected group. "By not inviting members of the commission to participate in the planning, that eliminated the voices of the seniors in Davis," Carol said. Staff responded that they would follow up after the meeting to determine why the listing omitted the commission and to report back to the body.

Commissioners also discussed meeting cadence and the commission’s relationship with the City Council; staff agreed to agendize a formal discussion about meeting frequency and clearer liaison communication at a future meeting. The commission’s October meeting is scheduled for the second Tuesday of October, 1–3 p.m., at Yolo Cares on Galileo Place.

No additional formal funding action was taken at the meeting; commissioners emphasized that any advocacy or funding recommendations would require separate consideration and compliance with public meeting rules.
