Commission approves purchase of hand-crank weather radios using RC&D grant

Marion County agreed to buy portable hand-crank weather radios with an RC&D grant allocation of roughly $5,000 for emergency preparedness and community distribution.
Russ (Speaker 6) briefed the commission on the options and said the grant would fund weather-radio projects similar to last year: “we got $5,000 on RC and D grant for weather radio projects like we did last year.” He described a portable hand-crank model with LED strobe and solar charging and noted both the plugged-in and portable units are internally linked to the National Weather Service. Commissioners compared quantities and unit features, discussed reserve inventory from prior distributions and timing for community giveaways in February or March to coincide with severe-weather outreach, and then moved and approved the purchase of hand-crank radios.
Staff said they would coordinate distribution logistics and report back to the commission on timing and county pickup points; the purchase was approved using the grant funds and no additional county appropriation was recorded at the meeting.
