The Cameron Parish Police Jury voted Dec. 1 to request an opinion from the Louisiana Attorney General about a potential conflict of representation involving the jury and the Telfkin Memorial Hospital board, part of the North Cameron Hospital District. The motion, moved by Mister Mark and seconded by Mister Sam, passed by voice vote.
Jurors said the question stems from concern that the same attorney may be representing both the parish police jury and the hospital board. The jury recorded that it would pursue a formal Attorney General opinion to clarify whether dual representation presents a legal conflict for matters affecting the hospital district.
The jury also agreed to invite the hospital board and legal counsel to a joint meeting on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 9 a.m. to discuss the issues and, if necessary, to have counsel prepare the letter seeking the Attorney General’s opinion. Staff confirmed the date and said a brief budget review may occur during the same meeting.
Mister Mark moved the request for the Attorney General opinion; Mister Sam seconded. The motion carried on a recorded voice vote. No additional formal actions were announced at the meeting about the substance of the hospital’s governance before the opinion is requested.
Next step: the jury will await the Attorney General’s guidance and meet with the hospital board at the Dec. 11 session to discuss legal representation and any related procedural steps.
