Summary
The Sumner School District board approved school calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28, certified 2026 excess property taxes, adopted an out-of-endorsement assignment waiver, and authorized multiple construction agreements for Sumner and Bonney Lake high school projects.
The Sumner School District Board of Directors on Nov. 18 approved a package of administrative and construction actions related to district operations and the recently passed bond.
Board members unanimously approved the school-year calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28, which were negotiated with the Sumner Bonney Lake Education Association, Sumner Paraeducator Association and the Classified Administrative Professional Association. The board adopted Resolution 0725-26 certifying the amount of excess property taxes to be levied in 2025 and collected in 2026, a step the district must take to notify the Pierce County Council and the superintendent of Puget Sound ESD.
The board also adopted Resolution 0525-26, an out-of-endorsement assignment waiver, acknowledging annual staffing challenges in placing fully endorsed teachers in every classroom and thanking staff who teach outside endorsed areas to maintain instruction quality.
Several construction agreements tied to the district’s bond moved forward. The board authorized an executive agreement with Skanska to serve as general contractor/construction manager for Sumner High School phase 2 and approved related contract documents (Skanska agreement A133-2019 and construction agreement A201-2017). Members said these steps position contractors to start preconstruction work and put ‘‘shovels in the ground.’’
For Bonney Lake High School expansion work, the board adopted Resolution 09/25-26 approving CourseMo Construction as the general contractor/construction manager and approved the related CourseMo A133-2019 agreement and a general-conditions construction agreement (A201-2017) with Coors Mill Construction.
The board adopted several district policies under policy 1310, including policies numbered 3116 (students in foster care), 3143 (notification and dissemination of information), 3226 (interviews and interrogations), 3241 (student discipline) and 5260 (personal records). A larger list of policies and procedures was presented for first reading and informational purposes only.
All motions were moved, seconded and approved by voice votes, with the chair calling for ‘‘aye’’ and declaring each motion passed. Where the meeting transcript records only voice votes, specific numerical tallies or named roll-call votes were not recorded.
What’s next: The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Central Board Office.
