Student report, vandalism cited in facilities update; district says restrooms repaired

A Skyline High School student representative told the Issaquah School District board that while facilities generally meet OE‑13 safety and structure standards, students reported hallway crowding, repeated bathroom closures and HVAC temperature problems that affect learning.
"Bathrooms are often closed off and when they aren't, broken sinks, missing stall doors, vandalism, odors, and the lack of soap or paper towels often deter students from being able to use the restrooms," the student presenter reported, summing findings from a 190‑response survey and interviews.
Martin Tierney, chief of finance and operations, said the district processed 6,371 facility work orders in the past year with 94.8% completed and described custodial inspections and an ongoing push to improve preventative maintenance and reporting of issues. He introduced operations staff to follow up on the Skyline bathroom concerns.
Jason Morse, executive director of operations, said district staff identified instances of vandalism, repaired affected fixtures and returned restrooms to operational condition within a day or two. "They were returned to operational conditions," he said, and the district updated training and reporting so similar problems will be caught sooner.
Board members asked about tracking vandalism, preventative maintenance cycles and whether another district‑level facilities assessment would be scheduled; staff said the 2023 assessment informed levy planning and will be updated as projects are completed. The board subsequently moved and approved the OE‑13 monitoring report during the meeting.
