Directors said the change from “profile” to “portrait” reflects a broader, more creative and student‑centered view of the district’s goals. Director Mullings moved the resolution and later moved a formal amendment to replace the word “profile” with “portrait” in seven places in the draft resolution. The amendment passed with voice votes; student representatives gave a unanimous advisory vote before the board approved the amended resolution.
Board members described the change as part of a wider effort to emphasize well‑being, durable skills and inclusion. “I just wanted to say how I like the change from, profile to portrait,” said student representative Nila during the discussion, echoing several directors’ comments that the new language better captures student ownership.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jacqueline Downey and other staff said the portrait will feed into the district’s strategic‑plan refresh and into future policy reviews. Board members noted the portrait’s role in shaping operational expectations and future program decisions.
The motion to adopt the amended resolution was approved; the board directed staff to incorporate community feedback gathered at recent town halls into next steps for implementation and strategic planning.
The board did not set an immediate implementation timetable beyond noting the portrait will inform the district’s ongoing strategic‑plan work and policy alignment. The board president thanked community members, staff and the student representatives for participating in the town halls that shaped the draft.
